Stuart James came to TheCIL in 2014 with twenty years of experience as an executive in for-profit sports and entertainment marketing after growing up on Long Island, NY, and earning a master's degree in communications from the New York Institute of Technology.

During his time as TheCIL’s Executive Director, Stuart has overseen many organizational changes, including a rebranding, revamped youth programming focused on education and employment, and the annual Ed Roberts Awards celebration. He has led initiatives to allow greater community participation and new leadership branches on the board, including rewriting bylaws. Stuart negotiated with a real estate developer to sell TheCIL’s historic original offices and convert them into accessible rental housing, partnering with the developer to memorialize the building and reserve some apartments for de-institutionalized community members. Selling this building doubled TheCIL’s endowment.

Stuart now lives in Alameda, CA, with his wife and twin daughters.  An avid photographer, Stuart also enjoys hand-cycling, cooking, and rooting for the NY Giants and the NY Knicks.
