The CIL Executive Director Stuart James

Stuart James came to TheCIL in 2014 with twenty years of experience in for-profit sports and entertainment marketing.  After growing up on Long Island, NY, and earning a master's degree in communications from New York Institute of Technology, he settled in Los Angeles where he worked in a variety of positions before being named Executive Vice President of Sports Unlimited. At Sports Unlimited, Stuart became best known for his work on Reebok’s award winning Terrible Terry Tate Campaign.  Stuart left Sports Unlimited in 2002, eventually landing in China as a partner in Emma Entertainment where he produced concerts and sporting events for the likes of Whitney Houston, the Rolling Stones and Manchester United.  He left Emma in 2007 to assume the Executive Director roll at China Team America’s Cup sailing in preparation for America’s Cup 33, before assuming his last post as Head of Asia Pacific for Helios Partners where he headed the marketing efforts for Arsenal Football Club, the WTA and Major League baseball in Asia.

While living in Beijing, Stuart noticed that, while the city was architecturally accessible (due to government-mandated improvements implemented as part of Beijing's bid to host the 2008 summer Olympics), he rarely saw anyone with a visible disability and he seemed to be the only wheelchair user in town.  This led Stuart to explore Chinese cultural attitudes toward disability, which in turn led him to found WheelsPlusWings, a media company focused on changing the countries perception of disability.  In 2014, Stuart met Judy Heumann, who educated him about the Independent Living Movement's history and how the movement paved the way for greater rights and opportunities for disability communities in America and around the world.  Judy and Stuart shared many perspectives on how to advance the interests of people with disabilities, and so Judy encouraged Stuart to reach out to TheCIL's board about serving as the agency's director.  Stuart now lives in Alameda, CA, with his wife and twin daughters.  An avid photographer, Stuart also enjoys hand cycling, cooking, and rooting for the NY Giants and the NY Knicks.
